Playing Final Fantasy VII on Windows Vista

INTRODUCTION

31VKF58JSNL__AA214_ Since I’ve ran out of new games to cover (and I’m saving up my resources for a trip to the US this April), I’ll drop back to an old game that I was playing since the PSOne and Windows 95/98 era…. Final Fantasy VII. Of course I’ve played this first in my old PSOne, which is now property of my siblings and my PS2 cannot play the old game, even if Sony touted backwards compatibility {shame}.

Since the PSOne’s no longer with me, I purchased FFVII for the PC from Datablitz. Unfortunately, Final Fantasy VII for the PC had terribly written code, and because of it, it was a chore to play on Windows XP (especially in SP2), since we all have to set some things to make it work. This also pose a problem for Windows Vista. The symptoms range from not being able to see the screen, seeing choppy graphics, the game crashing on start, and more

I used various search engines to look for answers. and one site was able to help me out. Here is the link: http://ntcompatible.com/Final_Fantasy_VII_c522.html

SETUP INSTRUCTIONS

Now out of all the replies there on how to make run FFVII on Vista, there’s one sure fire way. It came from this post and it reads (part):

    • Note : Not tested on isos, I used the original game. So use the original game like me! 😉
    • First : Install your FF7 Game (Uncheck the Yamaha, the directx and the directshow cases) and choose the Maximum install.
Follow the steps until the end.
    • Second : When installed, apply :
          1.02 patch,
          the chocobo patch,
          truemotion codec
in this order. *Available at : http://wiki.qhimm.com/FF7/Technical/Customising*
    • Third : Apply the goodies if you want.
Avatar mod for Advent children avatar in the menu
          *Available at : http://wiki.qhimm.com/FF7/Technical/Customising*
HD Patch to have better graphics for some characters (all mains and many others).
          *Available at : http://www.ffdream.com/out.php?table=file_2&id=833322&type=*
(Accept the popup below the adress bar to download it)
    • Fourth : Run FF7.exe, and the config utility will pop-up,
    •     Graphics : I used 640 x 480 Full Screen and checked NVIDIA TNT
          with renderer Direct3D hardware acceleration.
          Sound : Don’t touch it.
MIDI : MIDI Driver Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth and MIDI Data General MIDI
    • Fifth : My game started perfectly and it plays well!!!!!!

Now the instructions are simple, but let’s not end at that point, there are still some issues to take care of.

BUILD SAMPLE

MSI 8600GTS OC 256MB RAM *upgrade
160GB Seagate SATA
Windows Vista Ultimate + Service Pack 1 RC1 *upgrade

ffvii_pc_1 ffvii_pc_2 ffvii_pc_3 ffvii_pc_4 ffvii_pc_5 ffvii_pc_6 ffvii_pc_7 ffvii_pc_9 ffvii_pc_10 ffvii_pc_11  ffvii_pc_13 ffvii_pc_14

*All of these images came from the PC running at 640×480 resolution.

ADDITIONAL SETTINGS

In order to play the game and prevent from "crashing" at start, change the compatibility settings of the game .exe file to run as Administrator. With that we can start the game normally.

However, in the process of making things smoother, I discovered that messing around with NVIDIA’s settings can cause the game’s graphics to shot black lines as well as the tiled effect. To remedy this, either switch to Software Render mode (and lose any Anti-Aliasing properties the game already has), or reinstall the video driver to make sure everything is set to default.

Tutorial: How to Play Final Fantasy VII (7) in Full Screen Mode

The PC Version of Final Fantasy VII (7) by Squaresoft does not allow full screen mode. It’s been asked several times, and now.. I am releasing the solution.

    Step 1:

    Download Final Fantasy Update 1.3
    Link: http://download.cnet.com/Final-Fantasy-VII-XP-Patch/3000-7539_4-10122631.html

Download Aali’s Custom Graphics Driver for Final Fantasy VII
    Link: http://backup.ninjaloot.se/share/ff7_opengl-0.1a.zip

    Step 2:

Extract the files to separate folders using WinRAR
    Link: http://www.rarsoft.com

    Step 3:

Open the Final Fantasy VII Installation Folder (default folder is C:\Program Files (x86)\Square Soft, Inc\Final Fantasy VII)
*You can open this folder by typing C:\Program Files (x86)\Square Soft, Inc\Final Fantasy VII into the search bar located in your Start Menu and Pressing ENTER*

    Step 4:

Select all of the files from the Final Fantasy VII 1.3 patch folder. Copy and Paste (or drag and drop) them into the Final Fantasy Folder. (Allow them to be replaced, etc).

    Step 5:

Select all of the files from the Aali’s Custom Graphics Driver for Final Fantasy VII folder. Copy and Paste (or drag and drop) them into the Final Fantasy Folder. (Allow them to be replaced, etc).

    Step 6:

Double Click “ff7_opengl_tntfix” and choose “yes” etc.
Double Click “ff7_opengl” and choose “yes” etc.

    Step 8:

Right Click “FF7Config” -> Properties -> Compatibility -> Check the “Privledge Level – Run as Administrator” box. Press APPLY, then Press OK.

    Step 9:

Double Click “FF7Config” and click “Graphics” at the top. These should be your settings (change them to this configuration):

    Renderer: Direct3D Hardware Acceleration
    Display Resolution: 640 x 480 16bpp (Full Screen)
Checkbox: NVIDIA = CHECKED TNT = CHECKED

    Press OK.

    Double Click FF7 (ff7.exe)

I confirm this fix works as the Truemotion Codec is replaced by Aali’s custom Driver codec. HOWEVER, do check the QHIMM’s wiki entry as the custom driver get’s updated every now and then to fix some glitches.

I’m not sure how to respond with this, but with my setup, I don’t get to see the Edios Logo. I just press a key or button on my controller and the main screen loads.

I’ll double check with the installation on Windows 7, as I’ve not re-installed the game on my Rig. I’ll check voltrons.com’s reply if it works 100%.

I’ve checked the original link where I found the patches, they’ve more or less updated the required codecs. Instead of using true motion codec as stated here, download the AALI Open GL codec instead. 😀

i done all the steps but somehow when i reach the new game or continue.. none of my laptop keypad works.. i cant go up or down to select.. can i know is there any solution to it?

If you’re playing on the laptop, be reminded that the controls are on the Number keypad, so you’ll have to use the Fn key and reconfigure the keys to the correct order. Safest is to do get a controller (a used working PS1 or PS2 controller will do along with a USB to PS Controller adapter, shouldn’t be expensive).

Here’s the controls listing from the readme file of the install:
      KEYBOARD (default)
NumPad 8 (Up) – Move Up or Menu selection Up
NumPad 2 (Down) – Move Down or Menu selection Down
NumPad 4 (Left) – Move Left or Menu selection Left
NumPad 6 (Right) – Move Right or Menu selection Right
      NumPad Enter – [OK] (Action)
NumPad 0 – [CANCEL] (Cancel, Run in field w/ arrow keys)
NumPad + – [MENU] (Bring up menu)
NumPad . (Del) – [SWITCH] (Switch from Materia to Equip menus)
NumPad 9 (PgUp) – [PAGEUP] (Page up in menu, Escape from battle w/ [PAGEDOWN])
NumPad 3 (PgDn) – [PAGEDOWN] (Page down in menu, Escape from battle w/ [PAGEUP])
NumPad 7 (Home) – [CAMERA] (Switches camera view in world map)
NumPad 1 (End) – [TARGET] (Highlights targets in battle)
NumPad 5 – [START] (Pause during battle)
NumPad – – [ASSIST] (Help pointers in field, Help window during battle)
      CTRL+Q – Quit

      GAMEPAD (default)
Direction Pad – Movement and Menu Selection
      Right Button – [OK] (Action)
Bottom Button – [CANCEL] (Cancel, Run in field w/ arrow keys)
Top Button – [MENU] (Bring up menu)
Left Button – [SWITCH] (Switch from Materia to Equip menus)
L1 – [PAGEUP] (Page up in menu, Escape from battle w/ [PAGEDOWN])
R1 – [PAGEDOWN] (Page down in menu, Escape from battle w/ [PAGEUP])
L2 – [CAMERA] (Switches camera view in world map)
R2 – [TARGET] (Highlights targets in battle)
Start – [START] (Pause during battle)
Select – [ASSIST] (Help pointers in field, Help window during battle)
